PROJECT TITLE: Tackling Tomato Wilt from the Root: sequencing and Cloning of Fusarium Wilt-resistant Genes for transgenic Tomato Production in Nigeria.

PROJECT SUMMARY: This project has four major objectives:

  • To identify the gene responsible for Fusarium  wilt resistance in some tomato genotypes
  • To screen one hundred and fifty accessions of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) for the presence of gene resistant to Fusarium wilt using molecular marker techniques.
  • To develop protocols for efficient regeneration of somatic variants of farmers-preferred local varieties of tomato
  • To conduct an agro-mediated genetic transformation of farmers-preferred varieties of tomato for wilt resistance.
